Weather + Light: Painting atmosphere, mood & changing skies

Explore the beauty of changing weather and light through colour, tone and abstract painting. From misty mornings and storm clouds to evening light and the brightness that appears after rain, weather can completely transform a landscape. In this workshop, you’ll explore how to capture that atmosphere without needing to paint a literal sky or landscape.

You’ll experiment with tone, colour, transparency, soft and hard edges and layers of paint before developing your own atmospheric abstract painting inspired by a moment of changing light.

What you’ll explore:

  • Observing how weather and changing light affect colour and atmosphere

  • Creating tonal studies using light, dark and everything in between

  • Exploring warm and cool colour relationships

  • Using transparent layers, soft edges and subtle colour shifts

  • Developing an abstract painting that captures mood, atmosphere and light
