Colour + Place: Painting the feeling of somewhere

Explore how a meaningful place can become the starting point for an abstract painting. In this relaxed and intimate workshop, you’ll look closely at the colours, shapes, light and atmosphere that make a particular place memorable. Rather than trying to paint a literal landscape, you’ll learn how to simplify what you see and translate the feeling of a place into colour, shape and abstract form.

Bring a place that means something to you — it could be a favourite landscape, a holiday memory, somewhere close to home, or simply a place you love being.

What you’ll explore:

  • How to build a personal colour palette inspired by a meaningful place

  • Looking beyond obvious landscape colours to find unexpected combinations

  • Simplifying landscape into shapes, lines, colour and light

  • Using layering, contrast and texture to create atmosphere

  • Developing an abstract painting that captures the feeling of a place rather than simply depicting it
