Mark + Matter: Exploring texture, surface & natural forms
Discover the creative possibilities hidden in the textures all around us. From weathered stone and tree bark to shells, grasses, sand and lichen, this hands-on workshop explores how natural surfaces can be transformed into expressive marks, layers and abstract forms. You won’t be drawing objects in the traditional sense - instead, you’ll look closely at what makes their surfaces interesting and find your own way of translating that into paint and mark-making.
Expect to scrape, drag, scratch, layer, wipe and experiment as you build a tactile abstract composition.
What you’ll explore:
Looking closely at natural and weathered surfaces
Translating texture into expressive marks rather than literal drawings
Experimenting with scraping, dragging, scratching, wiping and layering
Combining different marks and textures to create depth and interest
Building an abstract composition through layers of texture, colour and mark
